Dewatering

Dewatering is the process of lowering the ground water table to allow for underground excavations that otherwise could not take place. The impact of groundwater on a construction project can be enormous. Unforeseen groundwater problems can cause major delays and often require drastic redesigns of the project itself.

MERSINO offers experienced project managers who are knowledgeable in the variables to consider when designing an appropriate solution to a groundwater problem. Two of the more important factors include how water moves in the soil and what water does to the soil. A thorough knowledge of the groundwater movement at a given site, as well as an understanding of the particular soils involved, will help determine the success of the project. Additional factors include:

  • Size and depth of excavation
  • Proximity of existing structures; their depth and foundation type
  • Design and function of structure to be built
  • Construction schedule
  • Any site contaminates

This chart shows some examples of the variables considered by MERSINO field staff when developing a dewatering solution:
